Letters, 1862-1863.

Group of letters Calvin Haynes sent to his wife, Lucy, regarding his experiences military service during the Civil War. The letters detail the Union Army surrender of Harper's Ferry in September 1862, and subsequent period of parole in Chicago, before returning to Virginia in December 1862. Thereafter, the letters detail winter encampment near Centerville, Virginia, and the march to Gettysburg beginning in June 1863. The letters conclude July 18, 1863 with a vivid depiction of "Pickett's Charge" during the Battle of Gettysburg.
